This piece is constructed from an invasive reed , Phragmites, which is native to Iraq and and many parts of the middle east. Since ancient times Sumerians and Babylonians have lived in the marshes between the Tigris and Euphrates and built their dwellings from this same reed. The area is thought to be the original Garden of Eden, from where man was cast out.Phragmites, is now listed as the most invasive plant in ontario, it is often seen along roadways and ditches. I have utilized its natural building properties to construct a triumphal arch to celebrate the "victory of Bagdad". Based closely on the proportions of the Arch de Triumph in Paris, it draws attention to Mans fleeting victory and nature's enduring survival.
